FLYING JEWEL

Kingfishers inhabit Zenpukuji Park in NISHIOGI. A pair lives in the small hole made in the middle of the stone wall; this kingfisher is considered a male one with a whole dark bill.

The beautiful wild bird has the glossy cobalt blue back and the orange front, so it’s often called a flying jewel.

This bird dived into the pond a few times to capture prey, but we doubt if it succeeded in catching the object.

飛ぶ宝石

西荻の善福寺公園・下ノ池に生息するカワセミ。この石垣の真ん中辺りにある小さな穴につがいで住んでいるが、これはくちばしが全体に黒っぽいので雄とみられる。

この野鳥は、背中が光沢のあるコバルトブルー、腹面がオレンジで、その美しさに「飛ぶ宝石」とも言われる。

何回か囲い綱から水中に飛びこんだが、狙った獲物を捕らえたか、この光景の限りでは疑わしい。
