LONG-TAILED BIRD

This small bird has the characteristics of extremely long (tail feathers) and short (bill).

One day just before lunchtime, “Enaga” or Long-tailed Tit perched on a tall tree at the Upper Pond in Zenpukuji Park.

The bird quickly flew away, perhaps because there were no nuts, insects or other food to aim for near the top of the tree’s branches.

The Japanese name is said to have been given because its long tail feathers resemble the handle of a ladle.

尾羽の長い小鳥

極端な長さ（尾羽）と短さ（くちばし）の特徴を合わせ持った小鳥です。

ある日のお昼前、善福寺公園・上の池の高木に止まった「エナガ（柄長）」。

この樹の枝の先端近くには、実や昆虫など目指す食べ物がなかったのか、すぐに飛び立っていきました。

和名は、尾羽が長いことから、柄杓の柄に見立ててつけられたと言われます。
