PECKING AT THE BASE OF TAIL FEATHERS

What does this gesture indicate?

A spot-bill duck found by a pond of Zenpukuji Park in NISHIOGI in the afternoon.

As spot-bill ducks are said to usually rest in the morning and act in the evening, this one is probably trying to prepare for action on the surface of the pond by pecking at the base of tail feathers to obtain fat for coating its feathers, which is expected to ensure a water-repellent condition.

この仕草は何を示しているのでしょうか。

ある日の午後、西荻の善福寺公園の「上の池」の池畔で見つけた「カルガモ（軽鴨）」。

カルガモは通常、午前中は休息して夜間に活動するといわれるが、このカルガモは、湖面での行動に備えて尾羽の付け根をつつき、羽毛に塗って体を濡らさないための脂を取ろうとしているのかもしれません。
