Has this bird found NISHIOGIKUBO a good place to lead an easy life?

A young bird of “Ootaka” or Northern Goshawk found by a pond of Zenpukuji Park. It is a representative resident bird of prey. The raptor is said to have appeared in urban areas aside from the local forest in recent years.

In Japan, the bird has been heavily used for “Takagari” or falconry since ancient times. Tokugawa shoguns are said to have practiced falconry in the Zenpukuji River Basin in NISHIOGI around 1860s.

A staff member of the service center commented, “Ah, such a bird has appeared in Zenpukuji Park! That is a young Northern Goshawk, which looks about six months old, and is characterized by brown stripes at the belly. The goshawk eats small birds such as sparrows and kingfishers, and mice.”
