What do you think this strange protuberance sticking out from the surface of the tree is?
It looks like the head of a toad or a cow, or the bill of a bird. Actually, it is a kind of mushroom called Saru-no-koshikake (literally monkey’s stool, or bracket fungus) grown on the trunk of a familiar cherry tree, Someiyoshino, in the Zenpukuji Park in NISHIOGI.
The name is said to have come from the semicircular flat shape that looks just like a stool on which a monkey sits.
Some kinds of bracket fungi are valued as good luck talismans because they are useful for food or medicinal purposes.

ガマガエルや牛の頭部あるいは鳥のくちばしのように見えます。実は、西荻の善福寺公園の桜の木（「ソメイヨシノ」）に発生した「サルノコシカケ（猿の腰掛）」と称するキノコの一種です。
この名前は、その形状が半円形で平たく、ちょうど猿が腰かけるイスのように見えたところからきているといわれる。
このキノコの種類は多く、中には食用や薬用になるものもあり、縁起物として評価されています。
