BLACK WATER BIRDS

Resident birds called “Ooban” or Eurasian coot found on a pond of Zenpukuji Park in NISHIOGI.

The bird is characterized by the black body, white forehead and white bill; it is said to have unique webbed feet like leaves of a tree called “bensoku”, so it can powerfully swim and dive to eat leaves of water-weeds and their roots.

西荻の善福寺公園の「下の池」で見つけた留鳥の「オオバン（大鷭）」。

全体的に黒く、白い額とくちばしが目立ち、弁足と称する、木の葉のような足指で泳いだり、潜ったりして水草の葉や根などを食するのが特徴といわれます。
