Here is a work that takes advantage of the Japanese witty term for “mitate”.
“Mizusashi” or a bamboo-made pitcher shaped like a pail displayed in an antique store in the northwestern part of NISHIOGI. It was made after the war.
The storekeeper commented,” A mizusashi is a vessel used to store water for adding to a tea kettle or washing tea bowls and tea whisks in the tea ceremony. This container looks like a bucket at first glance. Japanese people have a lot of puns like this that suggest something based on a metaphor. The inside of the vessel is coated with the highest quality lacquer.”
見立ての妙
日本人の「見立てる」という洒落っ気を利用した作品です。
西荻北西地区の骨董店に展示されている、手桶に見立てた竹製の水指し。大戦後の作品です。
店主のコメント「水指しは、茶道の点前で、茶釜に足す水や、茶碗や茶筅を洗う水をためておく器ですが、一見して手桶にみえます。日本人には、このように見立てによって何かを連想させる洒落っ気を示すクセがあります。器の中は、最高級の漆塗りです。」
