Noh and Kyogen masks used in Japan’s representative dramatic arts displayed in an antique store in the northwestern part of NISHIOGI. They were made by a mask artist, Oguma Tadashi.
The storekeeper commented,” Noh and Kyogen masks have been made somewhat abstractly so that people could feel various things since Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s Momoyama period (late 1580s). Therefore, the success of the work depends on how diverse it is perceived to be. For example, these Hannya masks may look angry at first glance, but depending on the viewer, they may look like they are smiling.”

店主のコメント「能面や狂言面は、豊臣秀吉の桃山時代以降、見た人がいろいろ感じられるように、ある程度抽象的に作られるようになりました。よって、その作品の出来は、いかに多様に感じられるかにかかっています。例えば、これらの般若面も、一見怒っているように見えますが、見る人によっては笑っているように見えるでしょう。」
