This statue of youkai or a legendary Japanese spirit, Amabie, is made of cement by a member of a studio in NISHIOGI.
Amabie first appeared in the tile block print published in the mid 19th century; it is said that the youkai emitted lights from the sea in the then Higonokuni (currently Kumamoto Prefecture) every night and prophesied good harvests and epidemics.
The craftsperson comments, “I was particularly fascinated by the halo and waves in the original drawings created by an illustrator in Kyushu and with her approval I decided to create the Amabie as a prayer for ‘dispelling pestilence.’ She asked me to draw the bird’s beak, rhombus-shaped eyes. and three legs.”
Amabie has recently been gaining popularity all over Japan as the strong guardian against the current plague, and the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare borrowed motifs from the youkai for an icon in appealing to avoid the spread of COVID-19.
アマビエ西荻に出現

「アマビエ」は、江戸時代後期の瓦版に初めて掲載された妖怪で、肥後国（現在の熊本県）の海中に毎日光るものを出し、豊作・疫病などの予言をしたと伝えられる。
制作者「九州在のイラストレーターが作成された原画の、とくに光背と波に魅せられ、同氏の承諾を得て『疫病退散』祈願としてアマビエ制作を決意しました。鳥のくちばし、目がひし形、足が３本、という３つの制作条件を求められました。」
今やアマビエのイラストは新型コロナウィルス追放の強力助っ人として人気急上昇、厚生労働省の新型コロナ感染拡大防止の啓発呼びかけ用アイコンのモチーフとしても利用されるに至っている。
