Special exhibition of sculptures using dry lacquer titled “Work of lacquer artist, Sano Keisuke” in NISHIOGI.

These crafts such as a tower-like work, utensils for drinking sake and” raden” rings are made by the young lacquer artist earning the respect of foreign people.

“Kanshitsu” is a sculpture technique using dry lacquer. There are two kinds of this technique: one for a hollow sculpture and the other for a wood-core sculpture.

The procedure is as follows: first, the basic form is made of clay or wood; second, linen soaked in lacquer is wrapped around the form in some layers; third, the details are depicted on the lacquer. Finally, in the case of the hollow sculpture, the clay is removed from the inside after the lacquer is dried. The technique was popular in the 8th and 9th century for making Buddhist statues such as” Ashura statue” at Koufukuji Temple in Nara.  

Exhibitor comments,” I chose to become a lacquer artist, because I didn’t want to do the same things as other artists. I titled the cube, but please imagine as you like.”

 

乾漆(かんしつ)の美

西荻窪駅北口近くのギャラリーでの乾漆工芸展(「漆作家 佐野圭亮の仕事」)。

海外も注目する若手漆作家の作品群。乾漆技法によるタワー状の作品(「宙<そら>の採掘坑」)、乾漆酒器(「若映<わかばえ>)、螺鈿(らでん)の指輪など。

乾漆とは、粘土(脱活<だっかつ>乾漆)や木彫(木心<もくしん>乾漆)で原型を作り、それに麻布を一定の厚さまで漆で塗り固め、脱活乾漆では粘土を型から外して素地とする技法のこと。8~9世紀に盛行し、奈良・興福寺の「阿修羅像」など、もともと仏像の制作に使われることが多かった。

出展者「人と同じことをやりたくないと思って、この漆工芸の道に入った。タワー状の作品は、タイトルはあるが自由に想像していただきたい。」
