Bamboo art exhibition titled “The inside and the outside” in NISHIOGI.
These crafts such as bamboo-made sweets cutters, flower containers, bamboo tea scoops and tea baskets are made of “susutake” or old soot-colored bamboos.
The bamboos are put at the ceiling of the thatched houses which can often been seen in the Japanese countryside. Their colors change with smoke risen from “irori” or sunken hearth to dark browns, as time goes by; some of the bamboos are over 150 years old.
You can enjoy a tranquil atmosphere which the crafts with subtle shades of colors create.

煤竹の美しさ
西荻北地区のギャラリーでの竹工芸展（「内外」）。
菓子きり、花入れ、茶杓、茶籠など展示されている日用品は、古い「煤竹（すすたけ）」で制作されている。
煤竹とは、とくに地方の古民家によくみられる茅葺屋根の天井裏に張り付けられた竹が、永年囲炉裏の煙などで燻されて濃淡を生み出したものである。150年以上経っているものもある。
こうした深みのある茶褐色の作品が醸し出す静かな雰囲気にしばし浸りたい。
