Bonsai means “potted and artificially dwarfed trees”; it is an art form that consists of planting a tree in a ceramic pot and taking care of it in an appropriate way. Bonsai-lovers put wires around the trunks and branches to change their shapes and trim them regularly using gardening scissors, thereby create a natural elegance to appreciate its beauty.

Bonsai originated in China and was introduced to Japan during the Heian period (794-1192). Growing bonsai has since developed independently as an art in Japan. Nowadays, bonsai art has a high worldwide popularity among people who love natural beauty.

This miniature bonsai is a Japanese red pine and 50 years old. As “tenpai” or ornaments accompanying bonsai, a tiny statue of Buddha and a delicately colored stone are put beside it, and a folding screen made from “washi” or Japanese paper is set behind it. The screen looks, for a moment, as if it were ink painting; actually, Indian ink flows down persimmon tannin. Including some “jin” or died branches, an originally intended bonsai art to create an outdoor landscape in a small world is completed.
