NISHIOGI

The store which aims at connecting traditional Japanese culture to the future. Immediately after going into the store, you feel fine scent; it is really the pleasant smell of Japanese culture, given off exclusively by natural materials for designing the interior.

The floor, being modeled on a tea house of Shugakuin Imperial Villa in Kyoto, shows a play pattern composed of “tataki” and buried “hifumi-ishi”or literally one-two-three-stone; “tataki” is made from three mixed materials-earth, slaked lime and bittern , and solidified with water.

The stone washbasin, located at the back of the room is called “tsukubai”, which is used for visitors to purify their hands before entering the tea house. The shopkeeper wanted to put a part of a Japanese garden in the room.

She comments,” I am happy to have achieved the goal. I often pour water on the bowl to make the stone wet and alive.”
