The miniature rocket embedded in the monument erected at the birthplace of the original rocket made in Japan facing the Ome-Kaido Road; it is located near Momoi Harappa Park in the northeastern part of NISHIOGI.
This rocket called the Pencil Rocket measures 23cm long, 18mm in diameter and 200g in weight.
After World WarⅡthe then Fuji Seimitsu Kogyo Co. started rocket development instructed by ambitious members of the then Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo led by Dr. Itokawa Hideo; the asteroid called Itokawa comes from his name. The first finished product was used as the horizontal launch experiment conducted at Kokubunji City, Metropolitan Tokyo in 1955, and the test to examine how to fly succeeded.
This success became the driving force for advances in the subsequent development of Japanese rocket technologies.
日本のロケット発祥の地
国産ロケット発祥の地の記念碑に埋め込まれた実物大のペンシルロケット模型。記念碑は西荻北の桃井原っぱ公園近くの青梅街道沿いに建立されている。
このロケットは、全長23㎝、直径18㎜、重さ200gの超小型。
戦後、この地にあった当時の富士精密工業が、糸川英夫博士（小惑星「イトカワ」の名前の由来になった人）率いる東京大学生産技術研究所の志あるメンバーの指導を受けてロケット開発に着手。1955年、第1号機を東京都国分寺市で水平発射実験に使用し、これを成功させた。
この飛び方調査実験の成功は、その後の日本のロケット開発の発展の原動力となった。
