CLOCKFACE-SHAPED FLOWERS

Passionflowers (Tokeisou or literally clock grass in Japanese) found in the residential area in NISHIOGI.

This plant is an evergreen perennial vine, and originated in Latin America. The flower is designated as the national flower of Paraguay.

The Japanese name has come from the unique shape of flowers: pistils sticking out of spread palm-shaped petals look like a clockface with the hour, minute and second hands.

The English name is said to mean “The Flower of Sufferings of Christ.”

時計の文字盤状の花

西荻の住宅街で見つけた「パッションフラワー」（和名：トケイソウ＜時計草＞）。

常緑のつる性多年草。原産地は中南米。パラグアイでは国の花に指定されている。

和名は、時計の文字盤を思わせるユニークな花の形に由来。手のひらを広げたような花弁からめしべが飛び出して、時計の短針, 長針、秒針のように見える。

英名は「キリスト受難の花」の意味という。
