September 23rd is Shubun-no-hi or the Autumnal Equinox Day. It occurs in the middle of the autumnal equinoctial week and is designated as a national holiday in Japan. Visiting their family graves on this day, people respect their ancestors and remember the deceased by offering flowers and incense sticks.
These flowers, found in Zenpukuji Park in NISHIOGI, are called Higanbana and Shirobana-higanbana (red spider lilies and their related species) and bloom brightly in clusters in this season; this feature led to the naming,
In Buddhism, higan, or literally “the other shore”, means attaining enlightenment by cutting off worldly desires.
彼岸を彩る花
9月23日は秋分の日。彼岸の中日に当たり、墓参して祖先を敬い、亡くなった人々をしのぶ日として、「国民の祝日」となっている。
西荻の善福寺公園に群生しているこれらの花は「ヒガンバナ（彼岸花。別名：曼殊沙華）」およびその近縁種の「シロバナヒガンバナ」と称する。ちょうどこの彼岸の時期に朱赤色ないし白色の鮮やかな花を咲かせることから、これらの名がある。
彼岸とは、仏教において、煩悩を脱し、悟りの境地に達すること、また、その境地を意味する。
