Annual event, NISHIOGI Doll Festival, was canceled due to Covid-19 problems this year, but several stores have been displaying their own” hina” dolls and related decorations for days.
Behind the tiered wooden stand, for example, is a bedside folding screen the height of which is less than 1m, lower than an ordinary folding screen. It was used to avoid the wind and the cold in the Edo Period (1603-1867).
The painting on the screen is Genji-e, or Illustrated Handscroll of The Tale of Genji, probably expressing that aristocrats in the Imperial Court are looking at an ongoing “Kemari”, or ancient football, at the garden.
西荻のひな祭り
例年この時期に開催される西荻の年中行事、「西荻雛祭」は、本年、コロナ禍のため中止となった。しかし、いくつかの商店では、自店ご自慢のひな人形や関連の飾りが展示されている。
このうち、木目込みひな壇の背後にあるのは枕屏風で江戸時代のもの。高さ1m未満で通常の屏風より低く、枕元に置かれ、風よけや防寒の役目を果たした。この屏風に描かれているのは源氏絵で、宮中の貴人が庭で行われている蹴鞠（けまり）を見ている図か。
