Japanese people often say, warblers in a plum, to express an example of well-matched pairing. This set phrase often appears in poetry, too. However, bird- lovers comment that the Japanese bush warbler hardly ever sits on the branch of the Japanese plum tree. In contrast to warblers, starlings like the tree very much.
This view shows a flock of starlings; some are sitting on the branch and one has just flown off the tree.
This bird has a dark body the total length of which is 24cm or about 1.7times as long as a sparrow and has an orange bill.
Considering the above, the set phrase should be re-stated as starlings in a plum.
「梅に椋鳥（ムクドリ）」
日本人は、昔から取り合わせの妙を表現するのに「梅に鶯（ウグイス）」という言葉をよく口にする。詩歌にもこの文句は頻繁に登場する。しかし、愛鳥家によれば、鶯はほとんど梅の木にはとまらないという。それに引き換え、ムクドリは梅の木も大好きだ。
この光景は、西荻の住宅の庭にある梅の木にとまるムクドリの群れ。この鳥は、黒っぽい体にオレンジ色のくちばしが目立ち、全長24㎝、スズメの約1.7倍とかなり大きいのが特徴だ。
こういう実態ならば、くだんの決まり文句は「梅に椋鳥」と言い替えたほうがいいのではないか。
