What's
NISHIOGI

DSC_0432.JPG

Posthumous artworks by late Richard Flavin (1943-2020) exhibited in an art gallery in NISHIOGI.

He was born in Boston and long lived in NISHIOGI and worked in the atelier in Ogawa-machi, Saitama Prefecture as a Washi and woodcut artist. The town is known for a production area of traditional Washi called Hosokawa-gami (a National Intangible Cultural Property) made from only kozo or paper mulberry; the Washi are characterized by durability and shiny luster.

The Buddha statue was beautifully made with casting method.

The storekeeper commented, ”The Chinese character,慈(ji) implies Jionji Temple where he served as its assistant caretaker and another character,悠 can be read as “yuu”. JIONJI PRESS possibly means that all of his works created in the Jionji Temple would be made public. He used to have said that life itself was art.”
