JEWEL TREE ON LAND

The Sweet viburnum (sango-ju or literally coral tree in Japanese) planted on the premises of Jikouji Temple in NISHIOGI.

It is designated by Suginami ward as a rare tree under the protection designation system, which aims at preserving valuable green as common properties of Suginami citizens.

The name comes from the special tree that produces a lot of beautiful red fruits closely with its twigs turning red from August to October; these crowded red products were compared to “jewels in the sea”, corals. This tree should really be called the jewel tree on land.

陸の宝石樹

西荻の慈宏寺境内に植えられている常緑の珊瑚樹。
この樹は、杉並区の貴重なみどりを区民共有の財産として保全することを目的に制定された「保護指定制度」に基づき、「珍木」に指令されている。
8～10月に赤い実がぎっしりとつき、枝先も赤くなるので、これを「海の宝石」サンゴに見立てて珊瑚樹と名付けられた。まさに“陸の宝石”の生る樹だ。
