Here are selected copperware representing traditional Japanese craftwork.

A Buddha image and incense burners called “Takaoka Copperware” displayed in an antique store in NISHIOGI.

Takaoka Copperware means copperware made in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture and boasts an overwhelming production share in this field in Japan; it is internationally well-known for having taken part in World Expos held in Vienna (1873) and Paris (1889).

The storekeeper commented, “Takaoka City is a representative production site of castings, and no other regions can make products of the same quality because of the difficulty of molding. This Buddhist image with the ninja-style mudra, for example, is the Great Sun Buddha which represents the ultimate reality of the universe. It was made about 100 years ago, and the upper eye of half-open eyes looks at this world and the lower one at the next world.”
