Shall we convert broken pottery into a work of art?

A workshop called Saikei Tanaka’s easy kintsugi held in front of the Japanese culture store near the north exit of NISHIOGIKUBO Station.

Kintsugi or golden joinery is the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver or platinum.

Here, you see the first step where masking tapes which have been used for firmly joining the broken parts and are being peeled off to prepare for pouring glue into the cracks. In the final step, thinner mixed with synthetic lacquer and powdered brass is being painted on the bonded lines with a brush.

By using this technique, precious pottery revives as a work of art.
