NISHIOGI

Skillful embroidering technique has captured the charm of famous paintings in a different style.

A special exhibition held in a gallery located in the northern part of NISHIOGI. Collected paintings painted by eminent Japanese and foreign artists are creatively embroidered with a sewing machine to express fluffiness putting cotton in the cloths; the crafts are, for example, a portrait of a Kabuki actor by Toshusai Sharaku and a picture called “The Scream” by Norwegian painter Edvard Munch.

On the ukiyo-e work, a Japanese proverb is also embroidered, which reads, “Kikuwa ittokino haji, kikanuwa isshounohaji.” This can literally be translated as, Asking is a temporary shame, not asking is a lifetime shame.
