FRAGRANT FLOWERS

A good scent wafts out of nowhere while strolling in town in this season.

“kinmokusei” or fragrant olives planted in Momoi-Harappa Park in the northeastern part of NISHIOGI.

The flowering tree is an evergreen originated in China. The height is 1.5-4m. It is said to have been introduced to Japan in the Edo period (1603-1867).

Many orange flowers blooming all at once give off a sweet scent, which should be regarded as one of autumn features.  

Incidentally, the flower language of fragrant olives is, for example, modesty or a noble person. 

香しき花

この季節、町を散歩しているとどこからともなく良い香りが漂ってきます。

西荻北東地区の桃井原っぱ公園に植栽されている「キンモクセイ（金木犀）」。

中国原産の常緑小高木。樹高は1.5～4mで、江戸時代に日本に渡来したといわれます。

一斉に咲く多数の橙色の放つ甘い香りは秋の風物詩といってよいでしょう。

因みに、「キンモクセイ」の花言葉は、例えば、謙虚、気高い人など。
