Kumiko mae-tsuitate or literally Kumiko front screen displayed in the Japanese culture store near the north exit of NISHIOGIKUBO Station.
Kumiko is a traditional woodwork technique, assembling wood parts in geometric patterns without using nails.
Tsuitate or screens have normally been used to divide the middle of the space or set behind things. Mae-tsuitate are said to have been made as accessories for Shoin or drawing room in the traditional Japanese residential architecture called Shion-zukuri, considering things such as flowers and outdoor scenes to be seen through Kumiko.
The storekeeper commented,” The material of these Kumiko is light and high-grade wood called Akita cedar. The cool setting for soft breeze to blow through makes people feel a sense of elegance.”

組子を透かして素敵なものを鑑賞しませんか？
JR西荻窪駅北口近くの、日本文化を繋ぐ店に展示されている組子細工の「前衝立」。
組子とは、くぎを使わずに、木の部品を幾何学的な模様に組み付ける日本の伝統的な木工技術です。
「衝立（ついたて）」は、本来、空間の真ん中を仕切るか、モノの背景に立てて使われてきた。しかし、前衝立は、書院すなわち伝統的な日本建築である書院造りの客間の前の建具のように、組子を透かして見る花や景色などを意識して作られた装飾品といわれる。
店主コメント「これらの組子の材質は、軽くて高級木材の秋田杉です。風が通り抜ける涼しげな設定も風情を感じさせてくれます。」
