What do you imagine when you look at these kanji characters?
The three engraved kanji works exhibited in the Japanese culture store near the north exit of NISHIOGIKUBO station. They show kuu (literally emptiness), sou-sou-sou (literally creation, imagination, encounter), and kame-to- kirin (literally tortoise and giraffe); these works contain the artist’s original landscape of mind.
Wood for engraving is said to be valuable if it has moku or rare grain patterns.
Kuu, for example, would remind you of the fundamental principle of Buddhism called kuu-soku-ze-siki, which can be translated as, emptiness is nothing but a materialistic object.
The exhibitor commented,” Please read空 as kuu, which has an image of infinite expanse, and enjoy whatever pictures you form.”
刻字の原風景
これらの刻字された漢字をみて何を想像されますか？
JR西荻北口近くの、日本文化を繋ぐ店で特別展示されている刻字作品3点。「空（くう）」「創想遭（そうそうそう）」、「亀と麒麟」のいずれにも作者の工芸の原点の思いが込められています。
刻字では、特に杢（もく）と称する複雑な模様のある木が希少価値、審美的価値が高いとされる。
これらの漢字のうち、例えば「空」は仏教の根本原理である「空即是色」を連想させます。
出展者のコメント「空は“くう”と読んでください。限りなく広いというイメージです。作品は、皆さまがお好きなように見ていただければと思います。」
