The tree is an evergreen, and the height is 1-3m. This kind of tree has been improved as a garden plant in Europe and is characterized by large flowers of various colors with spots on the petals. As the appearance of the flowers is gorgeous, the tree is called “the queen of flowering tree”.

西荻の民家の前庭に植栽されている「セイヨウシャクナゲ（西洋石楠花）」。
常緑樹で、樹高は1～3ｍ。欧州で園芸種として品種改良されたもので、花が大きいうえ色が豊富で、花弁の内側に斑点が入っているのが特徴。その豪華な花姿から「花木の女王」と呼ばれている。
シャクナゲの花言葉は、「威厳」、「荘厳」など。
