Scarfs and bags displayed in the Japanese culture store near the north exit of NISHIOGIKUBO station. These crafts are made from Ooshima-tsumugi and genuine leather.
Ooshima-tsumugi is woven by hand with pure spun silk threads in Amami Ooshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture. It is lustrous, light, wrinkle-free and sturdy, so it is regarded as the one that can be passed down three generations from parents to grandchildren.
The textile is also rated as one of the world’s top three textiles; the others are French Gobelin tapestry and Persian carpet.
The shopkeeper commented,” It is said that the number of craftspeople who can produce as many colors as these is small, but I do hope the handmade techniques of the world-famous traditional crafts will be inherited for a long time.”

JR西荻窪駅北口近くの、日本文化を繋ぐ店に展示されている、大島紬および本革で作製されたマフラーおよびバッグ。
大島紬とは、鹿児島県奄美大島において手作りで作られている純絹の伝統工芸品。優雅な光沢をもち、軽くてしわになりにくく丈夫な織物なので、親子3代にわたって受け継がれるほどだといわれる。
また、フランスの「ゴブラン織」、イランの「ペルシャ絨毯」とともに世界３大織物の一つとも評される。
店主のコメント「このような多彩な色を出せる職人さんは少ないといわれますが、世界3大織物の一つとしてこの伝統工芸品の技術はぜひ長く継承していただきたいと思います。」
