The luster of Kijiro lacquer painting is eye-catching.
An exhibition titled “Ki no shigoto” or Wood Work (by Ms. Yokoyama Keiko, November16-21, 2023) is on now in a gallery near the south exit of NISHIOGIKUBO Station.
The woodwork artist wants to create lacquerware that can be used every day, so she hollowed out beautiful grained woods by hand such as zelkova and chestnut, and painted the pieces repeatedly with yellowish-brown and transparent lacquer called “Kijiro lacquer”, using traditional techniques. The process allowed the wood grain to show through, and the pieces were made into visible bowls, cups and flower vases and so on.
木地呂塗りの美
木地呂塗りの艶やかさが目立ちます。
JR西荻窪駅南口の近くのギャラリーで開催されている展覧会（「木のしごと」＜横山桂子＞）（2023.11.16～11.21）。
作者は、毎日使ってもらえる漆器を作りたいとの思いから、欅や栗など木目の美しい木を手作業で刳り出し、「木地呂漆（きじろうるし）」と称する飴色の透明な漆を塗り重ねる伝統技法により、木目が透けて見えるお椀、盃、花瓶などの作品に仕上げています。
