“Kureome” or spider flower planted in front of the entrance of a private home in the southwestern part of NISHIOGI.
The plants are annual herbs originated in tropical America. The height is 80-100 cm. They are said to have been brought to Japan in the early Meiji era, in the 1870s. The flowers bloom in the evening and fall by the evening of the next day.
The English name is said to come from the elongated stamens that resemble spider legs.

クラゲの触手を思わせる花です。
西荻の南西地区にある民家の玄関前に植栽されている「クレオメ」。
熱帯アメリカ原産の１年草。高さは80-100cm。 日本には明治初期、1870 年代に渡来したとされる。花は夕方咲き、翌日の夕方には散る一日花。
この英名は、細長いおしべをクモの足に見立てたことによるそうです。
因みに、「クレオメ」の花言葉は、例えば、「風に舞う胡蝶」。
