Have you auspiciously welcomed the new deity of the New Year, u-doshi?
In Japan, there is a traditional custom to celebrate the New Year with various decorations.
These decorations are made of brilliant fibers called “seima”, which are the substances after removing the bast from the stalks.
Hemp rapidly grows up to 5m in about 100 days after sowing seeds, so the seima decorations are said to have been adorned wishing for the healthy growth of newly-born babies in the Edo Period (1603-1867).
Incidentally, the box contains newborn baby clothes and is wrapped with the leafstalks of hemp.
Nowadays, seima decorations are put at various places such as at the front entrance, under the alter and in bedrooms as purifying and cleansing tools.

みなさま、めでたく新年（卯年）の年神様をお迎えになりましたか？
日本では、古来、正月にいろいろな場所に「正月飾り」を飾る風習があります。
これは、「精麻（せいま）」の正月飾りです。「精麻」とは、大麻の茎の皮をはいで薄く削った繊維のことです。
麻は種を蒔いて100日もすれば5mにも生長するということで、江戸時代には子供の成長を願って飾ったといわれます。因みに、この箱には産着が入っていますが、包装に使われているのは麻の葉柄です。
精麻の飾りは、現在では汚れを除くツールとして、玄関、神棚の下、寝室などいろいろなところに飾られます。
