People exorcised their impurities of the last half year and prayed for good health.

The etiquette of this Shinto ritual differs from shrine to shrine: here, after the chief priest’s recitation of Norito or a ritual Shinto prayer, people were first handed a white sheet of paper cut into the shape of a person called “hitogata” and stroked the chest with it three times, blew on it and gave it back. Next, people went through the stone-made “Haraimon” gate unique to this Shrine like “Chinowa-kuguri”. After that, they visited the main Shrine and were finally given “Shinsen” or rice offered to the Gods.
大祓（おおはらえ）
人々はこの半年間の穢れを祓い、無病息災を祈りました。
西荻地域にある荻窪八幡神社で6月30日（金）に行われた「夏越の祓（なごしのはらえ）」。
この神事の作法は、神社により異なりますが、この神社では、まず宮司さんの祝詞の後「人形（ひとがた）」と称する、人の形に切った白い紙を渡され、これで胸を3回なで、息を吹きかけてお返ししました。次に、石で作られた当神社固有の「祓門」を「茅の輪くぐり」のように回りました。そのあと、本殿にお参りして最後に「神饌（しんせん）」をいただきました。
