AUSPICIOUS TREE TO WARD OFF EVIL SPIRITS

The flowering tree watches over the sound growth of students.

“Hiiraginanten” or Japanese mahonia planted in front of the student hall facing Shinmei Dori in NISHIOGI. It is an evergreen shrub originated in China and is said to have come to Japan in the 1680s.  

Trees with thorns on their leaves are said to have the effect of warding off evil spirits and misfortune.The large number of small spherical yellow flowers are also beautiful, making this a flowering tree worthy of watching over the great growth of students.

魔除けの縁起樹

学生さんの健全な成長を見守っています。

西荻の神明通りに面した学生会館前に植栽されている「ヒイラギナンテン（柊南天）」。中国原産の常緑低木。日本には1680年代に渡来したとのこと。

葉にトゲがあり、そうした樹木は、“難を転じる”として魔除けや厄除けの効果があるといわれる。多数の小球形の黄色の花も美しく、まさに学生さんの大いなる成長を見守るにふさわしい花木といえましょう。
