Despite the intense heat, the tree blooms splendidly for a long period of time from summer to early autumn.
“Sarusuberi” or Crape myrtle planted in a park in the southeastern part of NISHIOGI.
It is a deciduous flowering tree originated in southern China, and grows to a height of 3-10m. It is said to have been introduced to Japan during the Edo period (1603-1867).
The petals are curled and the surface of the bark is so smooth that even a monkey would
slide off the tree, which is the origin of the humorous Japanese name.
Incidentally, the flower language of “Sarusuberi” is, for example, “charm.”
縮れのある花
猛暑もなんのその、夏から秋口にかけて長期間華やかに咲きます。
西荻の南東地区の公園に植栽されている「サルスベリ（猿滑）」。
中国南部原産の落葉高木で、樹高は３～10ｍ。江戸時代に日本に渡来したとのこと。
花弁は縮れ、樹皮の表面がつるつるしていて、猿でも滑り落ちるほど滑らかであることがユーモラスな和名の由来です。
因みに、「サルスベリ」の花言葉は、例えば「愛嬌」。
