When opened slowly, the smell of camphor spreads.
A Sanuki carving valuables storage box decorated with colored lacquer displayed in an antique store (“Jiko”) in the northwestern part of NISHIOGI. It is a work by the lacquer artist Kamada Kadou in 1887.
The store manager commented, “This box is made of camphor tree and is used to store valuables such as important documents and ornamental hairpins. Camphor wood itself is a fragrant tree that produces camphor, and the original owner seems to have added camphor to this box to further protect against insects and rot.”
