TOWARD MI-DOSHI

Like a snake shedding its skin and being reborn as a new being, the new year should be a year in which we rack our brains and take on new challenges.

The zodiac sign for 2025 is “Kinoto-mi”, the sixth of the 12 zodiac signs.

Take these humorous papier-mache self-righting dolls displayed at a lifestyle goods store (Ametsuchi) in NISHIOGI, for example. In the middle are mother and child snakes, and on the far right are octopus snakes, a play on the Japanese word for happiness (tako).

脱皮して新しい姿に生まれ変わる蛇のように、知恵を絞って挑戦する年にしたいものです。

2025年の干支は「乙巳（きのと・み）」で、十二支のうち6番目の名称。

例えば、西荻の生活雑貨店（「あめつち」）に展示されている、和紙で作られたこのユーモラスな「張り子の起き上がり人形」。真ん中は親子蛇、右端には「多幸（たこう）」という言葉をもじった「蛸（たこ）蛇」が並んでいます。
