A-UN KOMAINU

The word “阿吽”（a-un）is the Japanese word for “exhalation and inhalation”, and it is considered to have come from the shape of this pair of ”komainu” statues. The statue on the right-hand side opens its mouth representing exhalation, whereas the one on the left-hand side closes its mouth symbolizing inhalation.

This word is often used in Sumo wrestling, Japan’s national sport, to express an initial charge: each of the sumo wrestlers rises to grapple simultaneously if their breath synchronizes.
 

阿吽の狛犬

「阿吽」という日本語の語源となった一対の狛犬。主に魔除けのために置かれる「八幡さま」系の神社の守護獣。狛犬のルーツは、エジプトのスフィンクスとか古代インドとか諸説あり。

向かって右の像は「阿（あ）」と呼ばれ、口を開けていて「呼気」を表し、左の像は「吽（うん）」と呼ばれ,口を閉じていて「吸気」を表している。対で守ることから「阿吽の呼吸」との言葉が生まれた。

この言葉は、例えば日本の国技である相撲でよく用いられる。「土俵上の両力士、睨み合っています。阿吽の呼吸をはかって同時に立ち上がりました！」
