Multi-layered stone pagodas found at two Soto sect temples in NISHIOGI. Both are memorial towers.
Zenpukuji Temple near Zenpukuji Park has a 13-story stone pagoda, where memorial services are held for those who died in World WarⅡ. On the body of the pagoda, four seated statues of Tathagata, including Shakyamuni Buddha, believed to be the “Kengyo shibutsu”, or Exoteric Four Buddhas, are carved in relief in four directions.
On the other hand, Kansenji Temple in the northeastern part of NISHIOGI has a nine-story stone pagoda. Its body is engraved with the seemingly statue of Kannon in a pose with the hands in prayer in four directions. Considering the Soto sect’s main propagation, it seems likely that the target of the memorial services is the general public.
西荻の寺院の石塔
人々は心を込めて丁寧に供養しています。
西荻の２つの曹洞宗寺院に見られる多層の石塔。いずれも供養塔です。
善福寺公園の近くにある善福寺には十三層の石塔があり、第2次世界大戦の戦没者が供養されています。塔身には、「顕教四仏（けんぎょうしぶつ）」と思われる釈迦如来をはじめ如来坐像4像が4方位に浮き彫りされています。
一方、西荻の北東地区にある観泉寺には、九層の石塔があり、塔身には観音さまのような、同じ合掌姿が4方位に彫刻されています。供養対象は、曹洞宗の主な布教対象からみて一般市民と思われます。
