These stones are called “chikaraishi”, or literally power stone. 14 stones are dedicated to Kasuga-jinja and 16 stones, to Igusa Hachiman-guh.

Mainly from late 19th century to early 20th century young guys in the neighboring areas who boasted of their muscle competed in lifting as heavy stones as possible at the time of festivals.

An unbelievably strong man lifted the heaviest stone of 73 kanme, or about 274kg, exceeding

even the current world record of the clean and jerk event at 263kg in the heaviest division in the international weightlifting competition.  

 

力石(ちからいし)

これらの石は「力石(ちからいし)」といわれ、春日神社に14個、井草八幡宮に16個奉納されている。

主に19C後半から20C初にかけて、近隣の力自慢の若者が仕事の合間やお祭りのときに、石担ぎの腕比べをし、優勝記念などとして石の目方と氏名を刻んで神社に奉納したもの。

このうち最も重いのは春日神社に奉納されている石で、73貫目(約274㎏)と杉並区内で最大。この記録は、現代の「重量挙げ」競技の最重量級(「105㎏超級」)におけるクリーン&ジャークの世界記録(263㎏)をも上回っており、この石を持ち上げたと伝えられる安田藤三郎は驚異的な腕力の持ち主であったことになる。
