This is a Japanese-style restaurant where you can feel the nostalgic Showa-era (1926-1989) atmosphere.
“Unagi Kappou Oowada” located about 15-minute walk north from JR Nishi-Ogikubo Station, near Ome-kaido.
This is the standard lunch ”Unaju set meal” that comes with chawanmushi and a small side dish. The broiled eel is soft and delicious.
Inside the store, there is a riddle-like rectangular Japanese cypress board with the words “Itto Nisho Gogo” written on it in kanji.
Asked if it meant“drinkers welcome!”, the storekeeper’s wife explained, “Itto is 10 sho by volume, or twice 5 sho, which means ‘go shobai’ ,nisho means two masu or a small square wooden box, so ‘masu masu’, and then gogo is half a sho, so ‘han jou.’ Together, they can be interpreted as ’go shobai masu masu hanjou’, meaning ‘your business is ever prospering.”
